Botanical Rants & Rambles, Part 28: Kindred Species | Beach Park, Illinois, USA

Taken yesterday morning in the northeastern section of the residential property where I live.

In Part 24 of this album I featured the Starry False Solomon's Seal, Maianthemum stellatum. But it wasn't until that species was pretty much done blooming that I noticed that its close kin, the more robust Large False Solomon's Seal, M. racemosum, was present in this lawn-turned-nature- preserve, too. And it was getting ready to blossom.

And now it has. Its flowers are of a curious sort. Unlike those of its little cousin M. stellatum, they have tepals that are so small that the blooms seem to be nothing more than a cluster of projecting stamens. In this the Large False Solomon's Seal more closely resembles yet another Maianthemum species I've featured —M. canadense, the Canada Mayflower.
