Integrative Natural History of Fayette Historic State Park, Part 16: Homage to Lake Michigan | Garden Peninsula, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, USA

At the location featured in Part 10 of this set. So we're still on the Big Bay de Noc shoreline, south of the park's ghost-town site. But now we're looking straight westward at the lake's northern reaches.

Having already looked at this part of the Garden Peninsula in terms of its rocks, buildings, and landforms, it's fitting that we honor the body of water that everywhere informs it and gives it meaning.

And having recently discussed my vision of the archigeosphere in another post, it's appropriate that we also honor other spheres already established in the Earth scientist's world view. In this aqueous scene we have

- The hydrosphere, represented by lines of surf herded into waveforms and driven at an angle to the coast by

- The atmosphere. The stiff and chilly inshore wind that's blowing here can only be imagined, but the thickening deck of clouds—stratocumulus becoming stratus—is apparent enough. We can argue, if we wish, whether the clouds belong to the atmosphere or to the hydrosphere (after all, they made of liquid water droplets). But there's no disputing that the foreground is the realm of

- The lithosphere. These flaggy slabs of surf-splashed rock have fallen from the low face of Burnt Bluff Group dolostone that lies just up the beach face. That is the local bedrock, Silurian in age, that formed 425 Ma ago, when this portion of the continent was in the subtropics of the Southern Hemisphere. Now it lies instead a fraction of one degree of latitude closer to the North Pole than it does to the Equator.
