Integrative Natural History of Minnesota's North Shore, Part GPSP-H: A North-Woods Beauty | Grand Portage State Park

Taken along the park's trail to the High Falls, just a little to the west of the Pigeon River.

Rubus parviflorus, otherwise known as Thimbleberry, is a most interesting member of the large Rose Family genus that also includes blackberries and raspberries. I first came across it in the Pacific Northwest. Only later did I find it closer to home, in its easternmost station, the upper Great Lakes region.

Despite its misleading specific epithet, the Thimbleberry's white-petalled flowers are quite large. However, the most attractive part of the shrub is its large, palmate leaves, which have a particularly felty texture. I also like the fact that this species is not beweaponed with the nasty prickles most of its often close relatives have.
