Exploring Mojave National Preserve, Part 4: Hills of Sand | San Bernardino County, California, USA

Now that we're getting closer, the pale apparition that sits under the faultlessly blue Mojave Desert sky begins to reveal itself. Could it be made of the same sand that blankets the playa in the foreground? Or is it one of this region's upthrust fault-block ranges?

In fact, this set of hills, as impressive as it is, is much too small to be bedrock-ribbed mountains. There are plenty of those ringing the horizon, but not here, in the middle of the desert floor.

It turns out that these hills are are very large sand dunes. But is it possible to get even closer to them? And how did they get here in the first place?

These spine-tingling cliff-hanger questions will be answered in photos that follow.
