Trees of Italy, Part 1: A Broad Crown and Pleasing Asymmetry | Terracina, Latium

Taken on the grounds of the Temple of Jupiter Anxur (Tempio di Giove Anxur). Its ruins stand on the rocky heights of the limestone massif above the lovely Tyrrhenian-seacoast town of Terracina.

A handsome specimen of a Carob Tree (Ceratonia siliqua). Though it was almost half a century ago, I still remember how this densely branched, broad-crowned tree soaked in the salt-hazed light.

Soon after I'd returned to the US from Italy, I had a print made of this slide; I framed and hung it in my apartment. And ever since I found this particularly image powerfully symbolic.

The tree is the universal city, connected to the Sun by their mutual defiance of gravity and simple beginnings.
