PIAZZA SANITA' A NAPOLI - a photo on Flickriver

            Nessun luogo incarna meglio del Rione Sanità l’anima misteriosa e allo stesso tempo contraddittoria di Napoli. Situato in una valle, ai piedi della collina di Capodimonte, il Rione Sanità, nacque come luogo di sepoltura in età greco romana. Il suo sviluppo urbanistico si ebbe solo a partire dal XVII secolo, con la costruzione della Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità, quando il Rione divenne sede prescelta da nobili e borghesi napoletani per le proprie dimore.  Per volontà di Giuseppe Bonaparte, tra il 1806 e il 1807 fu creato un collegamento diretto con Capodimonte, il Ponte della Sanità. Il Ponte, però, creò non pochi disagi al quartiere: di fatto, tagliò fuori gli abitanti dalla vita della città, isolandoli e creando terreno fertile per situazioni di criminalità e degrado che hanno travolto anche i monumenti e gli edifici storici. Dal 2000, con l'arrivo del nuovo parroco della Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità, è iniziato un processo di riqualificazione e valorizzazione del patrimonio storico-artistico e umano del quartiere ed è stato possibile recuperare chiese ed edifici storici del quartiere creando tantissime opportunità di riscatto per i giovani. 

No place embodies the mysterious and at the same time contradictory soul of Naples better than the Rione Sanità. Located in a valley, at the foot of the Capodimonte hill, the Rione Sanità was born as a burial place in the Greco-Roman era. Its urban development only began in the 17th century, with the construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, when the Rione became the chosen location for Neapolitan nobles and bourgeoisie for their homes. By will of Giuseppe Bonaparte, between 1806 and 1807 a direct connection with Capodimonte was created, the Ponte della Sanità. The Bridge, however, created many inconveniences for the neighborhood: in fact, it cut off the inhabitants from the life of the city, isolating them and creating fertile ground for situations of crime and degradation that also overwhelmed the monuments and historic buildings. Since 2000, with the arrival of the new parish priest of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, a process of redevelopment and enhancement of the historical-artistic and human heritage of the neighborhood has begun and it has been possible to recover churches and historic buildings of the neighborhood creating many opportunities for redemption for young people.
