The "Helios 44" is the normal or standard lens (f=58mm, 1:2.8) with which all Soviet SLR's of the Zenit series were equipped. The same goes for the export versions of these cameras, such as the RevueFlex EM from FotoQuelle.

There are numerous variants of the lens. From 1958 to 1992 it was built - as usual in the Soviet Union and the GDR - by several manufacturers (KMZ, MMZ, Jupiter and Valdai). Most lenses came from Krasnogorsk (near Moscow) from KMZ.

All in all it is considered the most produced lens in the world because of the high quantities produced.

Like many lenses from Soviet production after World War II, the Helios-44 had German ancestors. It was based on the successful 35mm SLR version of the Biotar 2/58 from Carl Zeiss from 1936. Its predecessor versions were designed and successfully produced by Zeiss and Schott (Glas) in Jena as early as 1920.

The good reputation Carl Zeiss still had in the Soviet Union after the war can be seen from the fact that the lens was initially referred to as the "Bio Tar Krasnogorski". It only got the name "Helios" later.

In the Che Guevara Memorial Santa Clara / Cuba a Zenit M3 with a Helios-44-2 2/58 is exhibited. The revolutionary and photographer had the camera with him when he was arrested in Bolivia in 1967.

Another thing: the well-known Che Guevara portrait, which adorns posters, shirts and other nibbles, goes back to a photograph of the photographer Alberto Korda.

Korda was friends with the Cuban revolutionaries. The photograph was taken in 1960 as a snapshot at a meeting. After the press was not interested in the photo, Korda gave it to an Italian publisher. It was only published after Guevara's death in 1967. In keeping with the spirit of the times, it quickly became an icon of pop culture.

It became particularly famous as a poster. The artwork came from a secretary of Andy Warhol. He had created it in the style of his boss's famous Marilyn work and sold it as "Original Warhol". Andy Warhol later recognized it as "his work" and collected all proceeds from the marketing of the logo.

Alberto Korda went away empty-handed for the time being. Only when the vodka manufacturer Smirnoff advertised the logo in 2000 did he sue and receive USD 50,000 in damages. Korda donated the money to Cuban children.
