“Nabel” – what is that?
How long did it take you to figure what the “Nabel” was? I lived in Göttingen for a year without knowing what everybody was referring to as the “Nabel”. Then I realised it was just the name of the intersection between Weender-, Theater- and Prinzenstraße, the central point of Göttingen. On the round bench in the middle of the intersection, you often see people taking a rest from shopping, and at the entrance of Theaterstraße you can listen to accordeon music. The “Nabel” is a meeting point just as the Gänseliesel is. But what about the sculpture on the pedestal above the bench? When I look at it I just see a man, a woman and a child, holding on to each other in order not to fall down onto the seated pedestrians beneath them. According to the city’s homepage though it is “a couple rotating around itself, mutually taking off their masks, while the child thrusts itself into them, desiring to be part of the amusement”. “Der Tanz” (“The dance”) by Bernd Altenstein is meant to be a symbol for human togetherness and getting together.

Was ist eigentlich der „Nabel“?

Ich hab bestimmt ein Jahr lang in Göttingen gewohnt, ohne zu wissen, was es mit „diesem Nabel“ auf sich hat, von dem alle reden. Dabei bezeichnet er einfach nur die Kreuzung von Weender-, Theater- und Prinzenstraße, die Mitte Göttingens. Auf der runden Bank in der Mitte der Kreuzung machen die Leute eine kleine Pause vom Einkaufen und am Eingang der Theaterstraße erklingt oft Akkordeonmusik. Der Nabel ist ein Treffpunkt, wie das Gänseliesel auch. Aber um was es hier eigentlich gehen soll, ist das, was sich auf dem Sockel über der Rundbank abspielt. Geradeheraus gesagt: Ich sehe dort einen Mann, eine Frau und ein Kind, die aussehen, als würden sie sich gegenseitig festhalten, um nicht auf die unter ihnen sitzenden Passanten zu fallen. Laut Homepage der Stadt Göttingen jedoch, ist es ein Paar, das „um sich selbst kreist und sich mit ausladender Geste gegenseitig die Masken vom Gesicht nimmt, während das Kind sich als Dritter im Bunde, im Wunsch, an diesem Spaß teilzuhaben, dazwischen drängt.“ „Der Tanz“ von Bernd Altenstein sei ein Sinnbild für das menschliche Miteinander, für Annäherung und Begegnung.

Cos'è "Il Nabel" (l'Ombelico?)

Devo aver vissuto a Gottinga per un anno senza sapere cosa sia “quell'ombelico” di cui tutti parlano. Si riferisce semplicemente all'incrocio tra Weenderstrasse, Theaterstrasse e Prinzenstrasse, il centro di Gottinga. La gente si prende una piccola pausa dallo shopping sulla panchina rotonda al centro dell'incrocio e spesso all'ingresso della Theaterstrasse risuona la musica della fisarmonica. L'ombelico è un punto d'incontro, così come il Gänseliesel. Ma che dire della scultura sul piedistallo sopra la panca? Quando lo guardo vedo solo un uomo, una donna e un bambino, che si aggrappano l'un l'altro per non cadere sui pedoni seduti sotto di loro. Secondo la homepage della città però si tratta di “una coppia che ruota su se stessa, togliendosi reciprocamente le maschere, mentre il bambino si infila dentro di esse, desideroso di far parte del divertimento”. 'Der Tanz' ('La danza') di Bernd Altenstein vuole essere un simbolo dell'unione umana e dello stare insieme.
