Locomotive, “Airedale”, built by the Hunslet Engine Company Ltd, Leeds, in 1923, is seen here, at Ackton Hall Colliery, on 04/05/1963.
Built by Hunslet Engine Company Ltd, Leeds, to Works No.1440, in 1923, for the Airedale Collieries Ltd, and delivered, new, to their Allerton Bywater Colliery, and named, “Airedale”, or “No.3”. The locomotive had quite a varied history, being transferred, from Allerton Bywater Colliery, to Peckfield Colliery, Micklefield, between May 1958, and July 1959; then transferred, from Peckfield Colliery, to Allerton Bywater Central Workshops, between July 1959, and June 1961; then transferred, from Allerton Bywater Central Workshops, to Newmarket Colliery, Stanley, on 24/06/1961; then transferred, from Newmarket Colliery, to West Riding Colliery, Altofts, between September, and December 1962; then transferred, from West Riding Colliery, to Ackton Hall Colliery, in January 1963; then transferred, from Ackton Hall Colliery, to Allerton Bywater Central Workshops, between March, and May 1966, being returned, back to Ackton Hall Colliery, between August, and September 1967. The locomotive was sold, into preservation, at the Yorkshire Dales Railway, Embsay, North Yorkshire, on 22/12/1975.
