Casabermeja - Cemetery - a photo on Flickriver

            The cemetery of Casabermeja, Cementerio de San Sebastián, is one of the most unique cemeteries in Spain and a protected cultural monument. It is known for its architecture that resembles a whitewashed village.

️ Cementerio de San Sebastián – Casabermeja

- Location: On the outskirts of Casabermeja, province of Málaga, Andalusia.
- Status: Recognized as Bien de Interés Cultural by the Junta de Andalucía since 2006.
- Architecture: The tombs are built as small houses with gabled roofs, whitewashed walls and streets in between. From a distance, it appears as if the deceased are buried upright, giving rise to local legends.
- Origin: Built in the 18th century, with extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries.
- Symbolism: The design reflects Andalusian village architecture, respecting tradition and community.

🌙 Traditions and events

- All Saints' Day (1 November): The inhabitants chalk the niches white and decorate the graves with flowers. In the evening, torches are lit and poems are recited in a ceremony called Versos para enterrar el verano.
- Guided night tours: During special occasions, candlelight tours are organized, which gives the cemetery a mystical atmosphere.
