Bark #1 - a photo on Flickriver

            River red gum trees (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and leaf litter along a riverside path in suburban Melbourne.

These trees are hard and dense, but to the touch they seem especially so, due to the smooth thinness of their bark compared to some other eucalypts such as the ironbarks.

In a comment on another photo in this series, I mentioned that these trees are an invasive weed in many parts of the world. That is an irony because they are struggling in much of their native habitat. They have been outmuscled by introduced willows over miles of riversides. Other stresses are climate change and the filching of water for irrigation upstream of the flood-prone areas they need to drink in…
