The blood of many Australians flows with a tincture of eucalyptus oil — they are fond of their ‘gum trees’. An expatriate encountering one abroad can suffer a pang of homesickness. Some of the most impressive standalone eucalypts I have seen were in California. Not only does the climate suit them well, they are free from the various harmful organisms that have co-evolved with them in their native Australia.

I am no expert, but I suspect this tree has had a long hard life in its suburban Melbourne green-space reserve (see following stream image). The branches are more than usually twisted. Many have dead, gnarled, and barkless ends. Judging by the number of hollowed-out stumps, the dead ends of the branches eventually drop off. The recesses make good homes for small native fauna such as birds and micro bats.
