Vintage Cat, Camera, and Photographer

            The main image is a scan of portion of a (6x9) cm negative. The photograph was taken, as close to the ground as I could get, when I was 14 years old and when the camera was twice my age at the time. Now, at upload, the camera is only 1.184 times my age. (Arithmetic assistance is offered below.)

My mother brought the camera with her from Vienna when her family came to live in Melbourne. It is a Zeiss Ikonta 520/2, equipped with a Cooke triplet Novar 6.3/10.5 cm lens and a Telma shutter. The lens serial number indicates that it was made in 1930.

The achievement of the composition was that its subject, our family cat, was actually in focus, about as close as the lens would allow!

The left inset is an image of the full 6x9 print made in 1958, still extant in 2020, along with the negative, although they were last in direct contact 62 years before that. The other inset shows the camera itself and the cheap scanner that produced the main photo.

The scanner is designed to handle negatives and slides no larger than 35mm. It can physically accept a 6x9 negative without a frame, but the scanned area is constrained to just above 35mm size (which luckily encapsulates the main subject here). Hence the cropping and the inclusion of the full frame inset to show the extent.
