Miss Maggie May Macaroni - a photo on Flickriver

            This little girl's story started at the local animal shelter.  According to the folks at the shelter some young kid brought her into the shelter in a cardboard box and said he wanted to drop her off.  The folks at the shelter said we'll certainly take her but there is an administrative fee.  The kid said no problem, let me go get my wallet out of my car.  He went outside, jumped in the car, and peeled out of the parking lot.  Nice kid, eh?

The shelter had my phone number and gave me a call.  I had a standing request in for any small dogs that no one else wanted.  I would normally foster them until they found a forever home.  Told them I'd be down in a bit, they said no worries since they had to process her in.  I finished what I had been doing and headed down.

When I first saw her my heart broke in half.  Broke. in. half.  A small Pomeranian, she was all of 5 pounds and in desperate need of a grooming.  She was in a kennel meant for a large dog which made her look even smaller and scruffy.  I went in the kennel and sat down on the concrete, taking off my jacket as I did.  I set my jacket on the floor and held out my hand to her.  She walked over, climbed up on my jacket and promptly snuggled in.  That's when I first met Miss Maggie May Macaroni.

She was in good health considering her age.  The shelter estimated her age as 9-10 years old, which was certainly in my ballpark.  She had no teeth but did have a heart murmer, most likely caused by infection from the lost teeth.  Her eyes were pretty clear and didn't have any outward deformities other than her back.  Look at a normal dog and their back will be fairly flat.  Macaroni's back was curved like a piece of elbow macaroni, hence the name Macaroni.  The Miss Maggie May part just seemed to fit her personality.

Macaroni was definitely a lady and definitely a lovebug.  Our best guess is she was grandma's/grandpa's dog and when they passed away the kid got the task of dealing with her.  It's too bad he couldn't see what I saw, the kid missed out on a real sweetheart.

She wasn't too active, she preferred a nice soft lap to sit on.  If there were no laps available she would climb in her bed and quickly fall asleep.  In the winter her favorite spot was on the hearth in front of the wood stove.  I imagine the heat felt pretty good on the old bones.

Macaroni did love going to the groomers for some pampering.  In that way she was a lot like my other dog Sally because she knew she was the prettiest girl in the room and had no problem letting you know.

Macaroni was with us for about 6 years before she passed peacefully in her sleep.  She was a little angel and certainly worked her way into my heart.   Nowadays she sits on the mantle, over the wood stove of course.
