Fireless and Sunless at Ardrossan 1 - a photo on Flickriver

            A visit to Shell, Ardrossan in September 1981 turned out to be an exceptionally dull and damp day. Their Fireless loco was in operation and a few dull pictures were taken, which I’ve tried to lighten up.
This fireless loco was built by nearby Andrew Barclay in 1928 and spent all its working life here, until operations ceased in 1986 when it was the last operational industrial steam loco in Scotland. 
It was then saved for preservation at the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group’s site at Minnivey and subsequently moved to what is now the Doon Valley Railway at Dunaskin where it sees occasional use with its steam receiver being charged up from other locos.
