***When We Were Kings - In Explore - a photo on Flickriver

            One morning in Chichen Itza, we were ahead of the crowds and caught one timeless messenger at the top of the Temple of Kukulcán.

As he descended he came to me and asked if I believed if Time could be split open and a man could walk through.  Before I could answer he spoke these words:

"When we were Kings, we lived like Gods
Countless souls worshipped at our feet
We built our heaven from the blood of the world
Forging an empire from the jungle to the sea

Crowned by the Feathered Serpent
We breathed our will into the World
And every word was a storm that brought down the stars
Burning in the Cauldron of Itza

What is mercy? Weakness!  So we fought our games
With fury and cunning and the deepest magic
There was no end to enemies so we were relentless 
Building temples with bones and filling the Well of Souls

But the new gods connived beneath our sacred stones
Building an army of too many enemies
And one night while we celebrated another victory
They unleashed a thief from across the sea
And we will never forgive them

As jaguars and eagles we fled into the mist
Watching our world collapse into ruins 
And when I looked into the marrow of your eyes
I saw fate squirm in the smoking mirrors

We were not born to be banished from our kingdom
We will not die as victims to betrayal
Gather the tribes, build the fury
For destiny waits impatiently at the edge

They never knew what we always knew
They were not ready for the ghosts of night
Slipping through silence we surround the gate
While inside I steal like a god on fire

This morning I stand on the ledge of forever
Forging plans with a host of otherworld saints
Knowing fate is already one step behind
And sliding into the Well of Souls

A trumpet blasts to scatter the silence
I shout as you enter the stadium
Tonight we’ll be feasting between bouts of mayhem
Tomorrow we’ll be kings again"
