            Die rote Ampel, das rote Rathaus, und die Lichter der Stadt. 

Das zwischen Fernsehturm und Spree gelegene Rote Rathaus ist der Sitz des Berliner Senats sowie des Regierenden Bürgermeisters von Berlin. Seinen Namen verdankt das Rathaus den für die Fassadengestaltung verwendeten rötlichen Klinkersteinen. Vorbild für diese rote Umkleidung waren die Bauwerke der norditalienischen Hochrenaissance.

Nach der Planung von Hermann Friedrich Waesemann erfolgte in der Zeit von 1861 bis 1869 die Erbauung des Rote Rathaus. Es entstand ein insgesamt 99 Meter langes und 88 Meter breites mehrflügeliges Gebäude mit drei Innenhöfen. Von weitem sichtbar ist der markante 74 Meter hohe Turm, der ein wenig an den Big Ben in London erinnert. Vorbild aber waren die Kathedrale der französischen Stadt Laon sowie das Rathaus in der westpreußischen Stadt Thorn.
