'Reflecting on Afon Conwy (River Conwy) [1] - Llanrwst, North Wales - 29.9.2020

            The 27 mile long Afon Conwy (River Conwy) flows through some of most beautiful scenery in North Wales. After it leaves it's more rugged surroundings at Betws y Coed, the river valley downstream is relatively wide with a much slower flow - resulting in several reflection photo opportunities like this.

This river view is looking upstream towards Betws y Coed with the 17th Century Inigo Jones iconic designed Pont Fawr three arched bridge downstream to my immediate right. 

The river plain is very fertile and supports dairying and sheep rearing. In Winter these pastures are used to nurture the sheep brought down from the surrounding mountains to avoid the worst of the Winter weather.

Natural Resources Wales constantly monitor water levels in the valley, with a view to giving flood warnings - which have significantly increased in recent years despite many millions being spent on ongoing defence systems. Invariably the river level rises above the raised embankment, to the right of this image, also causing extensive flooding in the town to my immediate left. 

The Gwydir Forest on the Western valley side (pictured far right) stretches over the slopes of the hills of Snowdonia. The rocks beneath are rich in minerals and there are many abandoned mine sites where copper, lead and silver have been mined since Roman times. Despite the onset of nature, the waste from one such abandoned mine is still clearly visible.
