Aurora Australis - Central Victoria - 11/05/2024

            This was one of the most spectacular sights we have ever seen.  My wife, son and I knew that there was due to be a good showing of the southern lights on Saturday night and so headed out bush. We filled the afternoon with some bird photography, and eagerly awaited nightfall. We have previously scouted out the Guildford Plateau as a location due to it's high vantage point and when we arrived, there were already 2 other cars there with photographers out and cameras pointed south. After taking a quick photo with the phone camera in night mode, we could clearly see colour between the breaks of heavy cloud cover.   My wife and son quickly set up the tripods and cameras and started imaging. My son was using a Canon r5 with EF 17-40mm lens and my wife was using a Sony a7III with a Samyang 24mm F2.8. I was using the phone rested on a rock to stabilize it during 6 second exposures. As the night went on, more and more people turned up and there would have been about 50 people there.  Headlights and high beams from the cars became really annoying, and at one point a drone was even launched. Anyway, about 9.30pm it was like somebody opened the curtains, the clouds cleared and beams of coloured light were clearly visible shooting into the night sky.  I have never seen anything like it. It was like of hundreds of torch beams being shone up into the night sky,  The greens and reds were clearly visible. For us, it was a once in a lifetime experience.  

This image was a 10 second exposure with the Sony A7III and Samyang 24mm F2.8 lens.  No post processing done.

Bottom centre in the image is Mount Franklin, an extinct volcano.
