Another way out? Green Grotto Caves, Jamaica (EXPLORED, 29/6/2020)

            Die Höhlen erhielten ihren Namen von den grünen Algen an den Wänden. Die ersten bekannten Bewohner der Höhlen waren Arawak-Indianer, die Keramikfragmente und Adzes hinterliessen. Als Jamaika eine britische Kolonie war, dienten die Höhlen den Spaniern, die von den britischen Siedlern vertrieben wurden, als Zufluchtsort. Es war auch bekannt, dass die Höhlen von entflohenen Sklaven genutzt wurden, daher der Name Runaway Caves. Bei den Dreharbeiten zum James-Bond-Film « Live and Let Die » mit Roger Moore als 007 (1973) wurden die Höhlen als unterirdische Basis des Bösewichts Doktor Kananga unter einem Friedhof auf der fiktiven Insel San Monique genutzt. The Green Grotto Caves are named for the green algae that cover its walls. The first known inhabitants of the caves were Arawak Indians who left pottery fragments and adzes. When Jamaica was a British Colony the caves were used as a hideaway by the Spanish who were being driven out by the British settlers. The caves were also known to have been used by escaped slaves, hence the name Runaway Caves. The filming of the 1973 James Bond film « Live and Let Die « with Roger Moore as 007 used the caves for villain Doctor Kananga's underground base beneath a cemetery on the fictional island of San Monique.
