Hudson's Bay Company's motto "Pro Pelle Cutem" translated from Latin means "a pelt for a skin". It may be an adaptation of pellem pro pelle from the Biblical verse Job 2:4 (usually translated as “skin for skin”). It is also argued that the Biblical phrase was changed so as to underline the risks of the trade to Hudson’s Bay; Pro pelle cutem could certainly mean “We risk our skins to get furs,” and the most generally accepted version has been that such a twist of the Vulgate phrase was the origin of the Company’s motto.

Three-hundred and fifty years ago today (2nd May, 1670), The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England Trading into Hudson's Bay was incorporated in London by a Royal Charter signed by King Charles II. Originally it was a fur trading firm, but by the 1850s it had turned into a general goods company and eventually became Canada's premiere department store chain. In 2013, Hudson's Bay Co. acquired the Saks Fifth Avenue chain in the United States.

Sadly due to the global Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, not only are the Hudson's Bay Co. stores shut down across North America (on-line sales are operational), there is absolutely no celebration on its sestercentennial (350th anniversary) today.
