There has been a church here since the closing years of the 1420s. The land, 208½ feet by 66 feet, was given by Robert Chicheley, a member of The Worshipful Company of Grocers. The building, of flint and rubble with stone dressings, had a tower at the west and a cloister on the north. It was one of a hundred churches in the square mile of the City of London.

Then, early on Sunday, 2nd September, 1666, a fire in a bakery near London Bridge became out of control and a strong wind fanned the flames westward. The Great Fire of London would eventually consume 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches (including the original church here at this site), St Paul's Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated to have destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's 80,000 inhabitants.

Churches, being the appointed places for the legal recording of baptisms, marriages and burials, could not simply be abolished. However, rebuilding was costly, complicated and took time. It was not until 1672 that construction of the new St. Stephen's, Walbrook was begun by {Later, Sir] Christopher Wren.
