These magnificent columns stand at the entry to one of colonial architect John Lee Archer's finest buildings. Archer (1792-1852) is most famous for coming up with the basic design for the Ross Bridge (1836), which stonemason Daniel Herbert then set about turning into a masterpiece of symbolic design. I could have titled this "Memories of Max", but that would have been presumptuous. The great Australian photographer of the 20th century Max Dupain (1911-1992), although well known for his iconic Australian landscapes and beach scenes, was a superb architectural photographer. In 1963 he published a book for the National Trust on Georgian architecture in NSW and Tasmania. It is loaded with magnificent monochromes.
