Rocks Meet the Ocean - a photo on Flickriver

This view of Bass Strait at the end of the Low Head promontory is significant for the rocks in the foreground. These rusty looking rocks are the result of a very healthy colony of orange lichen (Genus: Caloplaca). data.environment.sa.gov.au/Content/Publications/JABG29P05...

These lichen colonies thrive in the littoral zone (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Littoral_zone ) of coastal areas and in conditions of clean air. Though these rocks themselves are very ancient, these orange lichens have been around almost as long. There is actually nothing in this photograph that we would not have seen a million years ago.
