Ancient Tree - a photo on Flickriver

Ancient Tree

            In this final shot at the Liffey Falls I've moved the attention from the waterfall to this magnificent ancient tree. It must be several hundred years old going by its size, and the way that big branch twists its way to the ground and all that moss growing on its bark adds to that primeval sense.

I stand to be corrected but I believe this is a Tasmanian Blackwood tree (Acacia melanoxylon). These are the largest acacia trees in Tasmania and can grow to almost 50 metres in height. The wood is prized for fine furniture, but these days wild trees like this are left in the forest. Blackwood is now sourced in special plantations.

No wonder the young couple picnicking on the rocks were looking up into this tree. What a majestic sight!
