Dove Tail in Dry Dock - a photo on Flickriver

Dove Tail is a 12 metre yacht. It doesn't look all that big, but it is a measurement very significant in Australian yachting history. In 1983 at Newport, Rhode Island, "Australia II" flying the boxing kangaroo and with its revolutionary "winged keel", became the first yacht to defeat the USA in the famous America's Cup. At the time the race was for 12 metre class yachts.

Unfortunately the "need for speed" took over. The great American sailor Dennis Conner decided to run with a catamaran once and the rest as they say is history. It's sad, because although these high powered aerofoil catamarans race like Formula 1 racing cars, they rarely sit in the water. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQUl_hf6yo8

So as Dove Tail gets a little care in the repair yard, it reminds us of an earlier period in yacht racing history.
