Pioneer Methodists of Ross - a photo on Flickriver

            The Methodists, following the example of their founder John Wesley (1703-1791), were probably among the most active Christians in the colony at the time. Their mission was especially geared to the poor and working class people, and ministry to convicts would have been a major facet of their work.

The original Wesleyan Chapel was not built to last, and by the 1870s had fallen into disrepair. Plans were drawn up and the new church which we saw in the previous photograph was completed in 1885.

But these pioneer Methodists were not to be forgotten, and in 1935 some stones from the original chapel were placed in this fine looking memorial facing the setting sun.
