Art House 1888 - a photo on Flickriver

Art House 1888

            1888 was the centenary of the founding of Sydney Cove with the arrival of the First Fleet. Australia was still not strictly a nation state (Federation didn't come until 1901), with each colony like Tasmania answerable directly to the British Crown. Hence all the pomp surrounding Victoriana, especially in architecture. As an all wooden building it fits the Carpenter Gothic style of architecture.

This building, now known as the Art House (a backbacker hostel), was built in 1888 and one can imagine the opening of such a significant building to be quite an event. The Art House sits beside the North Esk River in the inner suburb of Invermay. You can see in this picture it is also behind a levee bank, built to protect it from flood waters.

PHOTO NOTE: This shot was taken late in the day (about an hour before sunset). I was struck by the interesting cloud formations. It was quite windy (as can be seen by the turbulent water), and that tree on the left made for an irresistible composition. Nature often plays a great hand and I was delighted that a graceful seagull made its presence felt in the middle of the composition. I could not have designed it better. Sometimes we get what we wish for.
