The four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines of the Avro Shackleton were replaced on the MR.3 version with the larger, more powerful (1,960 hp/1,460 kW) and slower-revving Rolls-Royce 37 litre (2,240 cu. in.) capacity, 60-degree V-12 liquid-cooled Griffon 57 piston engines with 13ft. 4in. (4.06 m) diameter contra-rotating propellers. The Griffon provided equivalent power to the Merlin but at a lower engine speed, which led to reduced fuel consumption in the denser air at low altitudes where the Shackleton would often loiter for several hours at roughly 500 ft. (150 m) or lower when searching for submarines. Lower-revving Griffons, compared to Merlins, reduced engine stress which improved their reliability. Using conventional propellers would have needed an increase in propeller diameter to absorb the engine's power and torque, this not being possible due to space limitations imposed by the undercarriage length and engine nacelle positioning. The de Havilland Propellers 6 bladed contra-rotating propellers gave greater blade area within the same propeller diameter.
The engine's distinctive noise often caused crew members to develop high-tone deafness.
