Prickly Tree Fern (Cyathea leichhardtiana - Alsophila leichhardtiana))

An abundant tree fern in these moist rainforests on the mountain ranges.

This part of the rainforest is more warm temperate than the sub tropical parts down by the creek.

Quite a few Coachwood trees in shot here.

This week I've been checking out a record of this plant in Sydney. Finding the exact gully where the prickly tree fern was recorded in Lane Cove. A local resident took me there this week. It was the same gully where the original botanist surveyed years ago with the same local resident.

Alas, no sign of this fern in Lane Cove, and I wonder if it was there in the first place. Perhaps it's a bit too dry and fire prone in Sydney for the Prickly Tree Fern (Cyathea leichhardtiana) .

This plant has had a recent name change, but I'm not sure if it has been accepted by all. (Alsophila leichhardtiana). Some people are resistant to change. It's hard to learn new names after some scientist did a name change. Easy to write it off as irrelevant. Sometimes these new names are not accepted. But in this case, the fern director of the National Herbarium says the new name is correct.
