The ground fern mother shield fern, is the plant growing at the highest point of continental Australia, at Mount Kosciuszko. Here at Mount Wilson, snow on the rainforest floor would not be common. But this fern can cope with the coldest temperatures in the country.

These rainforests are a curiousity, as the conditions are ideal for cool temperate tree species. Basaltic soils and high rainfall. But cool temperate tree species are very hard to find. Nothing here in the Eucryphia genus or southern beeches group (Nothofagaceae).

The all-rounder Golden Sassafras with the other warm temperate tree species take over the job as canopy dominant. (Doryphora sassafras).

The paucity of cool temperate rainforest tree species in these sites is attributed to fire. In recent times, Nothofagus and Eucryphia trees are found in the Blue Mountains, but their origin is from people, rather than a natural occurrence.

Soils at this site are based on Blue Mountains Basalts, which allow rainforest and tall eucalyptus to grow, due to the water holding capacity of the red/brown ''kraznozem'' soil, and the higher level of nutrients. A dramatic change of vegetation is seen when driving from the sandstone based soils, towards the basalt soils of Mount Wilson.
