Strangler figs; Ficus henneanna & Ficus macrophylla

            This rainforest is beside the Princes highway, south of Wollongong. I've driven past it dozens of times. Always, I glance to the side, seeing the forest remnant with the fig tree. So, today, finally, I walked inside the rainforest.

The two trees featured in the photo are strangler figs, the deciduous fig on the left, the Moreton bay fig on the right. (Ficus henneana & Ficus macrophylla).

The reason for the existence of this remnant might have something to do with the train line, which is even closer than the highway. It's a noisy rainforest; trains and traffic and rainforest birds. A rocky steep slope would have protected it from clearance for agriculture. 

Despite the low height of the forest and a paucity of large trees, it is classified as a sub tropical rainforest. Native quince (Guioa semiglauca) is one of the most common species here. One could say, however, that this is a dry or depauperate rainforest.

Despite not being the prettiest rainforest in the world, it is of great value for reasons of conservation and science. I was thrilled to be here today. And finally got to identify the two figs that can be seen from the busy highway, which today was full of traffic.
