Coal Outcrop, Blaen Bran, Upper Cwmbran 27 February 2024

            Coal outcropping by the track above the Mineslope Adit. It is believed that Cistercian monks from Llantarnam Abbey starting gathering coal in this area from outcrops. Eventually coal was extracted from bell pits, much of it for the tin works in Caerleon. This eventually led to the opening of the first adit of Cwmbran Colliery in 1837 by local MP and owner of  Cwmbran Ironworks, Reginald Blewitt. By its closure in 1927, a further two adits had been sunk.
