Main Adit, Springvale, Cwmbran 25 February 2023

            The remains of the Main Adit, bulldozed over by the council years ago. Over the last couple of years someone has excavated the keystone. On it can be seen “PN&B Co” - Patent Nut & Bolt Company, successors to Cwmbran Ironworks, and later Guest, Keen & Nettlefold, and 1879.

Cwmbran Colliery opened in Upper Cwmbran in 1837 with the sinking of the Porthmawr Adit, just above the Blaen Bran car park near the Siloam Chapel. This adit has collapsed without trace into the boggy ground. Later, in the 1850s the Mineslope Adit was sunk further up the hill, but this has been bulldozed over by the council. In 1879, the Main Adit down in Springvale was opened as well as the Water Adit. The Main Adit has also been bulldozed over by the council, thus the Water Adit is the only one to survive - so far! Cwmbran Colliery closed down in 1927, being deemed uneconomic. This situation was probably exacerbated by the large imports of free German coal as war reparations following the Versailles Treaty which ended the First World War. The other colliery in Cwmbran, Henllys Colliery, followed it in 1928.
