MCC Milepost, Monmouthshire-Brecon Canal, Long Tunnel, Pontnewydd, Cwmbran 13 April 2022

            In my childhood, this cast iron Monmouthshire Canal Company milepost indicating seven miles to Potter Street Lock at Newport Docks was intact. At some time, it has been damaged, either vandalism or an attempt to steal it. Very recently, it has been painted black (cue Rolling Stones).

The Monmouthshire Canal Company, later the Monmouthshire Rail and Canal Company, was taken over by GWR in 1879.
The Monmouthshire-Brecon Canal, or "Mon-Brec" is an isolated canal running from Brecon to Newport, with the Crumlin Arm going to Risca. The canal was built in two parts, the Brecon-Abergavenny Canal, constructed 1796-1812 by Thomas Dadford Junior, and the Monmouthshire Canal constructed 1792-1799, also by Thomas Dadford Junior. The two were linked up in 1812 at Pontymoile Junction, Pontypool. Today the canal is navigable only from Brecon to Five Locks at Pontnewydd, Cwmbran.
