Ross Admiralty Pattern 343 Ross 6x30 Binoculars c.1917

            This pair is marked with “NPL17” and “NPL18”, meaning they were tested in 1917 and 1918 at the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington. This body took over from the Kew (King’s) Observatory in 1900, moving from Kew to Teddington in 1902. One of their responsibilities was testing Admiralty instruments, including binoculars. The binoculars are amply marked with large elaborate government broad arrow in almost a 3D effect.  I have read somewhere in the past that this type of arrow was used by the Admiralty. Up to 1943 in WW2, the Admiralty issued Pattern 343 6x30s due to a shortage of preferred 7x50 binoculars; they mainly went to armed merchant ships, but the Royal Canadian Navy also used them early in WW2.

They have the serial number, 51830, and are solidly made, of brass construction. They are Ross construction Stereo Prism Series binoculars, but with older “screw on” tabs again in brass, for securing the sling loops,  rather than being integral with the top prism housings, which form the bridge of the binoculars. They are mechanically sound, but optically very dirty and slightly out of collimation.
