            A Midlands Gas Board gas cock vover.

The 1948 Gas Act nationalised all municipal and private gas companies, areas being divided into Gas Boards. In 1972, British Gas took over from Gas Boards under the 1972 Gas Act. In 1986, British Gas was privatised as British Gas Plc.  There are now various private suppliers. People will still refer to "the Gas Board" as a general term for a gas supplier.
