            Dances with Wolves is a 1990 film directed by by Kevin Costner, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Blake.

In 1863, during the American Civil War, the Union and Confederate armies are at an extreme standoff on the Tennessee frontier.
Officer John Dunbar (Kevin Costner), seriously wounded and aware of the risk of losing his leg forever, seeks an honorable death on the battlefield. The officer's stoic intervention, however, ends up benefiting the Northerners, who reward him for his deeds, treating him and agreeing to his transfer to the western frontier.
John is escorted to Kansas to the abandoned outpost of Fort Sedgewick by the muleteer Timmons (Robert Pastorelli). When Timmons is attacked and killed by Pawnee natives, Dunbar is left in complete isolation. Dunbar survives alone, foraging for supplies and sharing his days with his trusty horse Cisco and a wolf, nicknamed Two Socks because of the white spots on his paws.
Thanks to his acquaintance with the Lakota Sioux, rivals of the Pawnee, John begins to appreciate their culture and finds love with the Sioux woman, Raised With a Punch (Mary McDonnell).
With the help of the former officer and aided by Confederate rifles, the tribe's warriors succeed in exacting revenge on their historic adversaries, and Dunbar becomes a full-fledged member of the community, taking the name Dances With Wolves.
John develops a brotherly bond with Wind in His Hair and the shaman Kicking Bird, eventually rejecting his past as a soldier.
As the tribe prepares for the journey to their winter camp, Dances With Wolves has become a traitor in the eyes of the Confederate Army, which intends to punish the transgressor...
