Taubenschwänzchen / Hawk Moth - a photo on Flickriver

            Das Bild heute ist in gewisser Weise mehr ein technisches Experiment. Ende Juli hatte ich bereits geschrieben, dass es mir in den letzten zwei Jahren nicht gelungen war das Taubenschwänzchen so im Flug einzufrieren, dass auch die Flügel komplett scharf sind. Weil ich wissen wollte, ob das mit meiner Kamera möglich ist, hatte ich mich deshalb nach dem letzten Foto entschlossen die ISO zu ignorieren und dem Wanderfalter mit der Zeitautomatik aufgelauert. Ergebnis: Mit einer 1/8000s werden die Flügel so leidlich scharf - allerdings nur am oberen bzw. unteren Totpunkt wo die Bewegung an sich schon am langsamsten ist. Wenn der Flügel mitten in der Bewegung erwischt wird ist die 1/8000s immer noch nicht schnell genug. Ab dann braucht man entweder einen elektronischen Verschluss oder muß wie früher mit Blitzgeräten arbeiten. Bis ich die Zeit finde dies auszuprobieren kann man auf dem Foto heute aber schon sehen, wie die Flügel des Taubenschwänzchens aussehen.

Today's photo is in a way more of a technical experiment. At the end of July I wrote that in the last two years I had not managed to freeze the hummingbird hawk moth in flight so that its wings were also sharp. Because I wanted to know whether this was possible with my camera, I decided after the last photo to ignore the ISO and ambushed the migratory butterfly using the shutter priority. Result: With a 1/8000s the wings are reasonably sharp - but only at the top and bottom dead center where the movement is already at its slowest. If the wing is caught in mid-movement, 1/8000s is still not fast enough. From then on you either need an electronic shutter or have to work with flash units like in the analog times.
Until I find the time to try this out, you can see  in today's photo what the hummingbird hawk-moth's wings look like.
