The Eastgate and its famous clock, Chester, England

            The present sandstone arch dates to 1768 when the medieval gate through the city walls was demolished. This is also the site of the entrance and gate into the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix.
In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is said to be the second most photographed clock in England after Big Ben. The walkway that runs along the city walls passes underneath it.

The timber-framed buildings are fine examples of Chester's Black and White Revival architecture. Part of the general Tudor Revival of the 19th century, the buildings showcase timber-framing and wood-carving at its finest. The streets of Chester were transformed by these exuberant buildings and they were continued to be built well into the 20th century. Sadly, by the 1960's this style was deemed old fashioned and Chester suffered with some less than sympathetic buildings.
