Oxford. The High, marmalade and Europe's oldest coffee shop...both of them.

            The shop with the brown awnings on the right is Queen's Lane Coffee Shop (Queen's Lane itself runs between it and the grand facade of Queen's College just beyond). 
Established by Cirques Jobson, a Levantine Jew from Syria it dates back to 1654 and claims to be the oldest continually serving coffee house in Europe. That's quite some claim, but it's a very friendly and relaxed family run place.
However it's been frowned upon for centuries by the very grand and rather self important 'Grand Cafe' across the road (The building with the blue and gilded pilasters, and so grand I've never had the nerve to go in on my own. I just press my face to the window and admire the cakes and the Jaeger wearing clientele like a Dickensian urchin).

By the middle of the 17th century it was one of Oxford's most important coaching inns called The Angel, and according to a number of trustworthy sources, including Samuel Pepys the famous diarist, a Jewish entrepreneur named Jacob established the first English coffee house there in 1650, four years before its competitor across the road.
However it has had a very mixed and interesting history before  becoming a coffee house again.
In the 1860's the lease was bought by a local grocer called Frank Cooper. His son, also called Frank Cooper inherited it and his wife, a manic marmalade maker, (they still exist...we have one in our family with an endlessly wheezing 70's chest freezer brimming with Seville oranges like cannon balls.) made too much so he decided to sell it here in his grocers shop and 'Frank Cooper's Oxford Marmalade' was born and travelled the world and continues to do so.
In 1919 the lease was bought by the Twining brothers, another British household name, famous world wide for their blends of tea.
