Sloe bug - Dolycoris baccarum (Linnaeus, 1758) - Bessenschildwants

            Dolycoris baccarum can reach a length of about 10–12.5 millimetres (0.39–0.49 in). The basic color of pronotum and elytra is quite variable, but usually it is reddish purple, while scutellum is ocher. During the winter the basic color is dull brown. The whole body is quite hairy. The antennae are made by 4-5 black and white sections and the margins of the abdomen (connexivum) are alternately mottled with whitish and black. The male and female are very similar. A related species encountered in Europe is Dolycoris numidicus.

Herkenning - 10,0--12,0 mm. Halsschild en corium wijnrood en schildje groenig tot bruin met lichte punt; het geblokte connexivum steekt onder de vleugels uit. De enige schildwants met een behaard halsschild. Ook de nimfen zijn behaard.
Voorkomen - De bessenwants is een van de algemeenste grote wantsen en komt in geheel Nederland voor, maar is zeldzaam in kleigebieden.
Biotoop - Komt voor in allerlei kruidenrijke biotopen, onder andere veel in bloemrijke graslanden. Komt ook in tuinen en parken voor.
Fenologie adult - Overwintert als adult en kan gedurende een groot deel van het jaar als volwassen dier worden gevonden. De meeste waarnemingen komen uit de periode april tot november.
