Ordinary chameleon spider - with prey (Gewone kameleonspin - met prooi) Misumena vatia (Clerck, 1757) 2

            Misumena vatia is a species of crab spider with holarctic distribution. In North America it is called the goldenrod crab spider or flower (crab) spider,[1] because it is commonly found hunting in goldenrod sprays in the autumn. Young males in the early summer may be quite small and easily overlooked, but females can grow up to 10 mm (0.39 in) (excluding legs); males reach 5 mm (0.20 in) at most.

Family Thomisidae (Crab spiders);  characteristic of this family are the thickened front 2 leg pairs, which are significantly longer than the 2 rear.  The body is usually markedly flattened, and the legs are extended sideways at rest.  They are waiting hunters, who use their camouflage to overpower passing prey by surprise.

 Recognition:

 Body length: ♀ 7 - 10mm, ♂ significantly smaller;  3 - 4mm.

 ♀ variable in color, it can be adapted to the surface;  yellow, white, greenish, sometimes with red flank stripes on the abdomen.

 ♂ front body black-brown, with a light middle track;  abdomen whitish with dark longitudinal stripes.

 ♂ both front leg pairs black with light brown rings, the rear leg evenly yellowish.

 Biotope: Especially dry, sunny places such as forest edges and ruderal terrain.

 Lifestyle:
 The Common Chameleon Spider is mainly found on flowers, where they await prey, and can overpower with the strong front legs.  The female can adjust her color to the background from which she derives her Dutch name.  The spider usually sits motionless with spread front legs on a flower, and thanks to its powerful poison can also overpower very large prey, such as butterflies.

 Adult specimens can be found between May and August.

Familie Thomisidae (Krabspinnen); kenmerkend voor deze familie zijn de verdikte voorste 2 pootparen, die beduidend langer zijn dan de 2 achterste. Het lichaam is meestal duidelijk afgevlakt, en de poten worden bij rust zijdelings uitgestrekt. Het zijn afwachtende jagers, die hun camouflage gebruiken om passerende prooien door verrassing te overmeesteren.

Herkenning:

Lichaamslengte: ♀ 7 - 10mm, ♂ beduidend kleiner; 3 - 4mm.

♀ variabel qua kleur, deze kan worden aangepast aan de ondergrond; geel, wit, groenig, soms met rode flankstrepen op het achterlijf.

♂ voorlichaam zwartbruin, met een lichte middenbaan; achterlijf wittig met donkere lengtestrepen.

♂ beide voorste pootparen zwart met lichtbruine ringen, de achterste egaal geelachtig.

Biotoop: Vooral droge, zonnige plaatsen zoals bosranden en ruderaal terrein.
Leefwijze :
De Gewone Kameleonspin is vooral te vinden op bloemen, waar ze de prooi opwachten, en met de sterke voorpoten kunnen overmeesteren. Het vrouwtje kan haar kleur aanpassen aan de ondergrond, waaraan ze haar Nederlandse naam ontleent. De spin zit meestal onbeweeglijk met gespreide voorpoten op een bloem, en kan dankzij haar krachtige gif ook zeer grote prooien overmeesteren, zoals vlinders.
Volwassen exemplaren zijn te vinden tussen mei en augustus.
