Hoverfly (Puntbijvlieg) - a photo on Flickriver

            Eristalis nemorum is a species of hoverfly. It is found in the Palearctic (Fennoscandia South to Iberia, the Balkans and Italy, Ireland eastwards through Central Europe into Turkey and Russia and on into the Russian Far East, Siberia and Japan) and in the Nearctic (Quebec south to Colorado)

De Puntbijvlieg is een zweefvlieg met een kale zwarte middenstreep op het gezicht. Hij heeft een zeer kleine pterostigma in de vleugel dat vierkant of zelfs breder dan lang is. De vleugels zijn helder. De gele zijvlekken kunnen bij het vrouwtje ontbreken. De Puntbijvlieg lijkt veel op de Kleine Bijvlieg. 
Deze soort heeft een lengte van 10 tot 12 mm en kan worden gezien van april tot oktober.
De rattenstaartlarven (vanwege de lange en dunne telescopische adembuis) zijn te vinden in vijvers, sloten of tijdelijke poeltjes. De ademhaling gebeurt door een adembuis, waardoor ze in vervuild water kunnen leven. De larven voeden zich met rottend organisch materiaal. 
In het voorjaar kruipen de larven op het droge om te verpoppen.
