            NRCS Area Resource Conservationist Marni Thompson checks ground surface temperature of compacted, bare land of high traffic area. Temperature here is 97 degrees vs. air temperature of 82. Further into the field where there was cover and growing plants, the soil temperature was 70 degrees. Lower temps and ground cover also help to conserve moiture in the soil where plants can use it.
