Dark Skies Over Rifle Butts - a photo on Flickriver

Now called Garlic Lane this unclassified road is in Hampshire. There is only one road named Garlic Lane making it unique in Great Britain. Garlic Lane is governed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and the local parish council is Farleigh Wallop. Garlic Lane was so called due the profusion of wild garlic that grows in the wood at the B3056 end during spring that give off a pleasant aroma.

Garlic Lane is located within the county of Hampshire which is in the South East (England) region of the UK. 47.92 miles South West from the centre of London, 3.49 miles South West from the centre of Basingstoke, 13.95 miles North East from the centre of Winchester and 15.36 miles East from the centre of Andover.

The road is 1.3 km (1,400 yds) long running in a NW-SE direction currently between Beggarwood Lane in Hatch Warren and the B3056 Alresford Road in Farliegh Wallop. At the time this picture was taken the road was slightly shorter and connected with Cliddesden Road at the NW end. In the SE direction the road runs up hill starting at 165 m (540 ft) at Beggarwood Lane up to 208 m (680 ft) at the B3056.

The dark sky here is an approaching snow storm. The first 3 weeks of January 1976 were mild with little frost and snow. The first week was especially stormy with a very severe gale on the 2nd and 3rd. The pressure patterns changed on the 22nd as high pressure rose rapidly over Greenland and this linked with the Azores high producing a northerly over the UK by the 24th. This was the first real wintry spell for January since 1972 with snow showers and severe frosts. By the 28th, the northerly was gone as low pressure replaced the mid-Atlantic ridge. Pressure rose over Scandinavia and the low to the west of the UK sank southwards producing a cold easterly over the UK, the first winter easterly since January 1972.
