'The wise cows of Wessem' - a photo on Flickriver

In Wessem, there was a communal meadow, the Koeweide, where cows grazed. The cows walked to the Koeweide during the day and returned independently to their stables in the evening, often after a signal from a cowherd blowing a horn. 
The tradition of the “walking cows” ended in 1954, when the Koeweide was sold.

In Wessem was er een gemeenschappelijke weide, de Koeweide, waar koeien graasden. De koeien liepen overdag naar de Koeweide en keerden 's avonds zelfstandig terug naar hun stallen, vaak na een signaal van een koeherder die op een hoorn blies. 
De traditie van de 'wandelende koeien' eindigde in 1954, toen de Koeweide werd verkocht.
