"Nadchodzi Wadloper!" ("Daar komt de Wadloper!").  De machinist van de ST44 1212 wijst naar de tegentrein die het station binnenrolt in een poging om mij af te leiden. Natuurlijk. Net op dit moment komt de zeldzame Wadloper aangereden ...  We zijn weer terug in Międzyrzecz waar zonet een buurtgoederentrein uit Skwierzyna is aangekomen. Hij moet kruisen om vervolgens zijn route naar Zbąszynek te vervolgen. Zwarte wolken pakken samen boven het station en in een zonnegat krijg je zo'n prachtige theaterbelichting. En terwijl we op zo'n moment staan te wachten stapt de machinist even naar buiten en ziet ons staan. "Of we de cabine ook even willen fotograferen?" Uiteraard, zo gebaar ik, maar alleen met een topmodel erbij. De machinist begrijpt het en moet hard lachen. "Nie, nie" en daarbij gebaart hij dat hij niet de aangewezen persoon is, niet fotogeniek genoeg. Omdat ik daar heel anders over denk haal ik hem over om toch in "zijn" ST44 plaats te nemen voor een goede foto. Al lachend laat hij zich door mij aan de hand meenemen en neemt plaats achter een reusachtige koffiemok. Wanneer de fotoshoot klaar is laat ik mijn emailadres op de aanschrijving achter. Na een hartelijk afscheid spurt ik naar buiten. We rennen tot voorbij de uitrijseinen en het theaterlicht gaat op het allerlaatste moment vol aan: met een zwarte rookpluim vertrekt ST44 1212 richting Zbąszynek, luid getoeter en gezwaai vanuit het machinistenhuis. Het zijn dit soort ontmoetingen die er voor ons toe doen.

"Nadchodzi Wadloper!" (means "Here comes the Wadloper!" < nickname of our old Dutch train coaches, still operating in Poland>). The ST44 1212 engineer points to the train rolling into the station in an attempt to distract me. 
We are back in Międzyrzecz. The freight train from Skwierzyna has just arrived. After both trains have passed it will continue its route to Zbąszynek. Black clouds gather over the station and in a sun hole you get such beautiful theater lighting. And while we are waiting for such a moment, the driver steps outside and sees us. "Would we also like to take pictures of the cabin?" Of course, I gesture, but only with a top model. The driver understands and laughs out loud. "Nie, nie" and he gestures that he is not the right person, not photogenic enough. Because I think very differently about that, I persuade him to sit in "his" ST44 for a good photo. Laughing, he lets himself be led by my hand and takes a seat behind a huge coffee mug. When we are done I leave my email address on the time table and after a cordial goodbye I sprint outside. We run past the old semaphors and the theater light comes on at the very last moment: with a plume of black smoke, ST44 1212 leaves for Zbąszynek, loud honking and waving from the engineer's house. It is these kinds of encounters that matter to us.
