Cafe in St Mark's Square, from the bell tower

            Napoleon called St Mark's Square "the drawing room of Europe", before he went on to pilfer half its treasures.  The little creep. 

It is the heart of Venice, past and present.  The city's blockbuster sights are here: St Mark's Basilica, the palace of the Doge (ruler of Venice), and the bell tower.   

This is where you will hear languages from around the world from the tourists that gather here in huge numbers.   

However, the cafes on the square manage to deter virtually all of them by charging 10 euros for a cup of coffee. Ludicrous.  

Rows of empty seats like this were the norm.   Guys, it doesn't look good.   Call it 5 Euros, still a lot but perhaps worth it for a treat. 

Still, the square was free, as are many of the other sights, and as indeed is the pleasure of wandering the streets and canals.  You don't need to spend a lot to enjoy Venice.
