White sturgreon, Acipenser transmontanus

            These white sturgeon captured during California Department of Fish and Game gill-netting study for striped bass near Jersey Point in the California Delta in May of 1979.  Both fish are a little over 4 feet long and are still juveniles.  In California, white sturgeon can be found in San Francisco Bay, the Delta as well as in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, the Klamath and Smith River and occasionally in the Eel River.  Along the Pacific coast they range from Ensenada, Mexico to the Gulf of Alaska.
